We arrived back at the house after a great lunchâturkey sandwiches on kaiser rolls, with commentary from Ryan that I used too much salt on mine. One dip of ice cream at the parlor, because it was there, and a few groceries that Ryan insisted on carrying to the truck himself. There was a moment when I looked at us from a weird perceptionâ¦a somewhat out-of-body perception, like a camera lens panning out: me jumping in the passenger side while he loaded the back seat with the bags.
The image snapped me with a sting of guilt for Joe. For all he knew, I was signing documents, sitting through showings, and pining over law reviews. Did Joe even know me? Of course he didnât; I didnât even know myself. All I did know was what was happening with Ryanâ¦it was out of place, unexpected, and felt so amazingly natural.
I got out of the truck and noticed the three boxes on the porch from Jessica. I opened the door, and Ryan helped me carry them in after he put the groceries on the counter. I put away the cold stuff before joining him again outside to finish the few areas that still needed to be mulched. It wasnât long before I looked up and saw Mrs. Simmons walking from her car.
âAbigail. This looks the best it has since your aunt lived here. Youâve certainly enhanced it in a way that Iâm sure whoever sees it would be crazy not to make an offer.â
Ryan came around the house.
âRyan Jameson, is that you?â She shielded her eyes from the powerful setting sun.
âYes, maâam.â
âWell, if this isnât the cutest thing ever. Do yâall remember posing for me in the yard when you double-dated with Jessica andâ¦what was that boyâs name? Oh shoot, I canât remember it.â
âPaul. I canât remember the last name, but it was Paul,â I said. âJessica ended up having an awful night.â
âPaul Grayson,â Ryan added. âAnd I remember why. Donât you remember him blowing his nose all night? I thought the dude shouldâve seen a doctor.â
âOh my gosh,â I said, completely traveling back in time to remember that. âAnd he kept trying to hold her hand. Man, I think she even told you to take him back home. She didnât want to catch anything.â I shook my head. âGosh, he was a strange guy. Wonder what happened to him.â
âIâm not sure.â
âWell, anyway. You two are just adorable. Look at the dirt on your faces.â Mrs. Simmons pointed at us and smiled.
I looked at Ryan and laughed.
âWhat? You havenât seen yourself, surely.â
I looked at my arms. Black.
âWell, Iâve got to get back to the office and put this listing in. I listed it high to test the market. Weâll see what happens. I just need your signature, Abigail. And the power of attorney.â
âPower of attorney?â Ryan inquired.
I took the papers from her and ignored his question. I couldnât answer that question. Even thinking about Tessa made me feel uneasy in his presence.
âHere you go.
